Noah van de Wetering (1999) is a visual artist living and working in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
He pursues a conceptual practice through various modes of relation. His work investigates the production of meaning within both a general art historical context as well as a personal, cultural context. His work is an ongoing exploration of photography, print, painting, and installation, constantly redefining systems of display and publication.
“In my work, I engage with sources as the conceptual art movement from the 1960’s that predominantly focussed on the idea over the material result of a work of art. This related to me and my process-based work-ethic when I encountered the movement in my late teenage years. Another key source to my practice is the Dutch state archive, particularly the sections documenting my Indonesian grandfather’s migration history. These records are marked by a highly specific and sensitive form of notation and categorization. Interestingly, both these sources—conceptual art and the state archive—converge within the same historical period. I engage with these sources both directly and metaphorically. By using art practice as a tool for thinking and focusing on the idea rather than the outcome, we can critically engage with histories, such as that of my family, and access languages beyond the textual, chronological, and falsely objective language used by state archives. “
Together with graphic designer Noa Wassink, I founded the publishing platform Sessssion, which focusses on small edition printed matter and collaborative work methods.
